What is included for free?
The map, one car, and one move reminder are free. The reminder is set for 45 minutes before a known future deadline, or shortly after parking if less time remains. Notification permission is required, and delivery isn’t guaranteed. Alternate+ adds multiple cars, custom timing, and widgets through an optional in-app purchase.
Does Alternate show empty parking spaces?
No. Alternate shows parking rules from NYC Open Data, not live space availability. It helps you check a curb and manage the spot you choose in New York City.
How does Alternate know where I parked?
You choose your car, move the map to the exact curb, and confirm the spot. Optional location access can center the map, but it does not automatically save or update where you parked.
Can I rely on the app instead of posted signs?
No. Public data can be incomplete or out of date, and temporary restrictions may not appear. Always inspect the posted signs and curb before leaving your car.
What happens when street cleaning is suspended?
Alternate includes NYC’s planned street-cleaning suspensions and checks the official current-day announcement when you open the app. Suspensions change street-cleaning guidance only, not every parking restriction. Check other posted rules too. Emergency checks need a connection and are not real-time alerts.
Do I need an account?
No account is required. Your vehicles and parked spots are stored on your device. Location access is optional, and product analytics is off by default. Apple’s map services and NYC Open Data still process map and parking-data requests. The privacy policy explains the details.
Does Alternate work offline?
Alternate can show cached parking signs and its bundled street-cleaning holiday calendar offline. Loading a new area or checking current-day emergency announcements needs a connection. Always confirm the posted sign, especially when saved information may be old.
